- This is a sad, haunting moving story about a husband and wife’s nerve wracking journey from Syria to the UK. After suffering a terrible loss, the pair are forced to leave their beloved home. Clinging on to a shred of hope, husband and wife go through the motions of living and surviving, both severely affected in different ways.Luckily this novel doesn’t go into too much detail about the real horrors of Aleppo. The horrors are certainly told, leaving the reader shocked and heartbroken, especially about the children living in Aleppo, but the author tells it in a way so as not to disturb the reader too much. This story also has hope and love in it too. Nuri one of the main characters, has a lovely friendship and bond with a man named Mustafa. Mustafa adds happiness amongst the grief told in this story. This book has humbled me. It’s left an impression. I feel extremely fortunate and privileged to have been born in the UK. After hearing about Syria in the media, this novel has helped me understand the situation and why it’s important refugees are granted asylum.
I was totally gripped reading this book, it was recommended at the back of the tattoo of auschwitz book so I thought I would take a look. It’s takes a good few chapters to get into but if you can keep reading the story does keep you wanting more.I loved how the book was written and switch from present days struggles to what happens on Nuri and Afra’s Journey from war torn Syria – the stories of the people they lost it’s utterly heartbreaking. It really does go through the stages of explaining how good there life was until the country was torn a part with the war. I think this book helps to convey the story of refugees which were all over the news not that long ago, these people risked there life escaping there country and it shows the sheer determination by these people to find somewhere safe.Recommended this already to so many people. I find it hard to find books which have me gripped but this book did that.
