And as a storm unleashes its fury on the island, everyone is trapped. All have a secret. All have a motive. One guest won’t leave this wedding alive . . .

I love crime fiction and I have read a lot of it, but, dear God, this book is terrible. The characters were stereotypes and mostly unpleasant and I hoped that most of them would be bumped off. Towards the end of the book I just skimmed each page as it was so predictable and over written. Please people, buy a book by Sara Paretsky instead of this nonsense. Oh and I guessed the ending half-way through the book.

I enjoyed the Hunting Party and when I saw that Lucy Foley had written a new book, I immediately ordered it. In many ways the Guest List has many similarities to her previous work.Group of 30 somethings getting together in a remote location for celebration? Tick.Multi person narration which each character telling their version of events? Tick.Hidden secrets from the past coming to the surface? Tick.Guest List is set on an island off the coast of Ireland rather than the Scottish Highlands but the characters are certainty similar. And, unsurprisingly, they all have their quirks and flaws, none more so that groom to be, the Bear Grylls-esque, Will. I found this story to be better paced than Hunting Party and the tension increases through the book like watching a kettle boiling and then exploding. The Harper Collins marketing department might have got a bit carried away with their claim that this is the “Biggest Crime Thriller of 2020” and some of the reviews on the cover hailing Lucy Foley as the new Agatha Christie are completely over egging it; I accept there are parallels between this book set on a remote island and Christie’s classic Evil Under the Sun set on Burgh Island off Devon, but that’s about as far as it goes. Despite this over enthusiastic marketing, this is a really good thriller and I will keep an eye out Lucy Foley in the future.
